Ad Cost Index Q4 2026
What advertising really costs in America — eight channels, one table, every number sourced. Free to cite with attribution.
Summary
The cheapest reach in American advertising still belongs to billboards ($2–$18 CPM) and TikTok ($4–$10 CPM); the most expensive belongs to podcast host-reads ($25–$50 CPM) and connected TV ($25–$35 CPM). Instagram clicks run $0.40–$2.00, Google Search averages $5.42 per click, and a radio 30-second spot lands anywhere from $65 to $1,400+ depending on market and daypart. US podcast ad revenue hit $2.86B in 2025 (+17.6% YoY) and is tracking to $3.0B in 2026 (IAB/PwC). All figures below are 2026 US planning baselines — not quotes.
The single most important point
Cost per impression is not cost per customer. The cheapest CPM on this table is often the most expensive sale. Judge channels by what a customer costs you, not what a thousand impressions cost — a $50 podcast CPM that converts beats a $4 TikTok CPM that doesn't.
The Index: Q4 2026
| Channel | Typical unit cost | CPM / CPC range | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billboard (out-of-home) | $750 – $30,000+ per 4-week cycle | CPM $2 – $18 | Mass reach, local awareness, frequency |
| Radio (30-second spot) | $65 – $1,400+ per spot* | CPM $10 – $20 | Drive-time frequency, local retail |
| Podcast (host-read mid-roll) | $25 – $50 CPM | CPM $25 – $50 | Trust, considered purchases, niche audiences |
| $0.40 – $2.00 per click | CPC $0.40 – $2.00 | Visual DTC, engagement, retargeting | |
| TikTok | $0.30 – $1.50 per click | CPM $4 – $10 | Young audiences, creative-led reach |
| YouTube (in-stream) | $5 – $10 CPM | CPM $5 – $10; CPV ~$0.05 | Video storytelling, mid-funnel intent |
| Connected TV (programmatic) | $25 – $35 CPM | CPM $25 – $35 | Premium brand moments, lean-back attention |
| Google Search | $5.42 average per click | CPC ~$5.42 (varies $1.63 – $9.87 by industry) | High-intent capture, demand harvesting |
*Radio spot range is an industry estimate: major-market drive time runs $200–$800 per 30-second spot while small-market dayparts start near $65. See the radio guide for the full breakdown.
What moved this quarter
- Podcast keeps growing, prices don't. US podcast ad revenue reached $2.86B in 2025, up 17.6% YoY (IAB/PwC), tracking to $3.0B in 2026 — but CPMs have stagnated or compressed as 1,300+ new brands entered in Q1 2026 alone. Growth is volume, not price.
- CTV premiums are softening. Amazon's ad-tier launch pulled streaming CPMs down across the board; only Netflix and Max were forecast to hold averages above $30 (eMarketer via DigitalApplied). A buyer's tailwind.
- Meta auctions keep inflating. Instagram CPMs rose ~10–15% in 2025 on Reels/Stories demand; Triple Whale's 2025 data shows Meta CPMs up 20% YoY across 35,000+ accounts. Budget for Q4 seasonality — TikTok CPMs run 40–60% hotter in Q4.
- Google remains the most expensive click among mass platforms ($5.42 average) — and the most bought, because search intent converts.
How we built this
- Compiled, not modeled. Every figure comes from a published 2026 rate guide, an agency benchmark dataset, or an industry study (IAB/PwC). We publish the source list below so you can check our work.
- Measured vs. quoted. Where both exist, we note the gap. Example: podcast sell-side rate cards list host-read mid-rolls at $25–$40 CPM, while buy-side transacted data lands at $15–$30. The last independently measured marketplace average was $21.37 (Libsyn, September 2024) — that series has been discontinued and never replaced.
- US unless noted. All benchmarks are US market figures in USD.
- Quarterly refresh. We re-verify every number each quarter and add channels only when they clear our data-quality bar. The Q1 2027 edition publishes in January 2027.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ad Cost Index?
Ad4Sale's quarterly benchmark of what advertising actually costs across major US channels. This Q4 2026 release is the inaugural edition, covering billboard, radio, podcast, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, connected TV, and Google Search.
Which advertising channel is the cheapest?
By CPM, billboards ($2–$18) and TikTok ($4–$10) are the cheapest reach; podcast host-reads ($25–$50) and connected TV ($25–$35) are the priciest. But the cheapest impression is often the most expensive customer — judge by cost per acquisition, not CPM.
Why do podcast CPMs vary so much?
Published figures mix sell-side rate cards ($25–$40) with buy-side transacted data ($15–$30). Genre premiums are real: finance and B2B tech reach $40–$65 CPM. The last measured marketplace average was $21.37 (Libsyn, Sept 2024); that series is discontinued.
How often is the Index updated?
Quarterly. Q1 2027 publishes in January 2027 with refreshed benchmarks.
Are these figures quotes I can buy against?
No — planning baselines from published 2026 guides and datasets, not quotes. Every channel sells on auction or negotiation; always get real quotes before budgeting.
